This Hollow Earth is a freelance advisory practice run by Arjen Vrielink. This page explains what personal data is collected through this website and in the course of my work, and how it is used.
Who is responsible
Arjen Vrielink, trading as This Hollow Earth, the Netherlands. Contact details are on the Contact / Imprint page.
This website
- Visit statistics (Umami). The site uses Umami Cloud to count visits and page views. According to Umami it sets no cookies and does not store personal data on the visitor’s device; visitors are told apart only by a daily rotating hash. I use the figures to see which pages are read. No advertising trackers are used.
- Hosting (Cloudflare). The site is served through Cloudflare. As with any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address and request details to deliver the site and protect it against abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Embedded content. A few pages embed videos from YouTube and one page embeds a post from X. Loading an embed connects your browser to Google or X, which can set cookies and see that you visited the page. Their own policies apply. If you prefer, do not play or load the embeds.
- Links to other sites. LinkedIn, Medium, X, GitHub and other external sites have their own privacy policies.
When you contact me
- Email. If you email me, I receive and keep your name, email address and message for as long as needed to handle the conversation and any follow-up.
- Meeting bookings. Bookings made through Calendly are processed by Calendly under its own privacy policy. I receive your name, email and the details you add.
- Newsletter. If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address is processed by the newsletter service Buttondown so I can send you editions. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every edition.
Business contacts and outreach
When I get in touch with people at companies in the environmental services industry, or they get in touch with me, I keep a business contact record in a CRM system (Zoho) and in my email. This typically holds your name, role, company, business email address, and notes on our contact. The information comes from you, from public sources such as company websites and professional profiles, and from my own address book. I use it only to prepare and follow up on professional conversations, not for advertising by third parties, and I do not sell it. If I contacted you and you would rather not hear from me, tell me and I will stop and remove your record.
Why, and on what basis
Data is used only to respond to enquiries, schedule meetings, send the newsletter and run this advisory practice. The legal basis is your consent (subscribing, contacting me, booking a meeting) or my legitimate interest in running a professional advisory practice and making business contact, in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Sharing
I share data only with the services named above that I use to run the website and the practice (Cloudflare, Umami, Calendly, Buttondown, Zoho, and my email provider), and where the law requires it. Some of these providers are based outside the European Economic Area and transfer data under their own safeguards.
Retention
Correspondence and business contact records are kept as long as they are relevant to our contact or engagement, or as long as Dutch tax and accounting law requires for business records. Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask to access, correct or delete the personal data I hold about you, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable format. Email arjen@thishollow.earth to exercise these rights. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
Changes
This policy may be updated from time to time. The date at the top of this page is the date of the last revision.
